Assignment Types are categories that control how much groups of assignments count toward a student’s final grade in a class (for example: Homework, Quizzes, Tests, Projects).
You assign a percentage weight to each type. By default, that weight is divided equally among the individual assignments in the type. You must set up at least one Assignment Type before you can enter any assignments.

Example
Homework = 50% of the class grade with 5 homework assignments → each counts 10%.
If there are only 2 quizzes in a 30% Quizzes type → each counts 15%.
Standard (non-extra-credit) types must total exactly 100%. Extra-credit types sit above 100% and can only raise a student’s grade.

Key options and how weighting works
  • Make this type Extra Credit — Appears in blue. Adds weight above the required 100%. Extra credit never lowers a grade.
Example: Student at 84% who scores 100% on all 4% extra-credit work rises to 88%. If they score 100% on one extra-credit item and 0% on another in the same type, the net raise is smaller (e.g., to 86%).
A class that has only extra-credit types will not calculate an overall grade.
  • Drop lowest grade in this type — Automatically drops the lowest score in that type (shown in green on the grade sheet). The remaining assignments share the type’s full weight (e.g., 5 assignments at 10% each become 4 at 12.5% each). Enable it separately for each type if you want to drop the lowest in more than one category.
  • Weight each assignment based on their points — Instead of equal shares, Gradelink uses the point values you assign to each individual assignment. Weights adjust dynamically as you add more assignments.
This option and “Drop lowest grade” cannot be used together (to keep the drop fair).
  • Automatically weight assignment types by points (checkbox lower on the page) — Turns types into simple labels only. All weighting is driven solely by the points you enter on each assignment. Useful if you prefer a pure points-based system.
How to create or edit Assignment Types
  1. Click the Assignment Types tab (if you don’t see it, first click the grade sheet for the class).
  2. Select the correct class from the drop-down at the top if needed.
  3. Enter a title (e.g., Homework) and the Weight %.
  4. (Optional) Check Make this type Extra CreditDrop lowest grade in this type, or Weight each assignment based on their points
  5. Click Add (or the equivalent save/submit button).
  6. Repeat until standard types total 100%. Gradelink shows how much weight is still needed.
To edit an existing type
Click the type in the list, change the name or weight in the lower section, then click Submit (or Save). Adjust other types first if the total would exceed 100%.

To delete a type
Click the type → Delete type. You cannot delete a type that still has assignments attached. First delete those assignments or reassign them to another type.

What you should see
  • Types listed with their weights in brackets.
  • Extra-credit types in blue.
  • A running total that reaches (or shows remaining weight toward) 100% for standard types.
  • After saving, the grade sheet reflects the new weighting.

Tips
  • Set types up at the beginning of the term when possible.
  • Individual assignments are created later on the Assignments tab and must be linked to a type.
  • For a pure points system with no category weights, just enable “Automatically weight assignment types by points.”
